Itinerary
Day 1
Marrakech to Tachedirt

From here, climb out of the valley toward the Tizi n’Tamatert pass (2,279m), gaining early views across the Atlas range. After the pass, descend into the Imnane Valley, moving through traditional Berber villages and agricultural terraces where daily life is still closely tied to the land.
5–6 hours hiking
Overnight in a gîte or camp
Day 2
Tachedirt to Azib Likemt
Leave the valley and begin a steady climb toward Tizi n’Likemt (3,555m), one of the highest passes on the route. As you gain elevation, the landscape shifts from cultivated valley to more rugged and open mountain terrain. From the pass, descend into a remote grazing area at Azib Likemt (around 2,600m), far from the more traveled routes.
5–6 hours hiking
Overnight camping
Day 3
Azib Likemt to Amsouzart
Cross Tizi n’Ououraine (3,100m), with wide views across the Toubkal massif and surrounding peaks. The route then descends into the Tifnoute Valley toward Amsouzart, one of the more isolated villages in the High Atlas. This section blends high mountain terrain with a return to inhabited valleys, offering a closer look at Berber life in a more remote setting.
5–6 hours hiking
Overnight in a village gîte
Day 4
Amsouzart to Lac d’Ifni
Leave Amsouzart and trek toward Lac d’Ifni (2,295m), the only lake in the High Atlas. The route passes through quiet mountain terrain with fewer settlements as you move higher.Arrive at the lake and camp beside its turquoise water, surrounded by steep mountain slopes. This is one of the quieter points of the trek, with time to rest after several longer days
.3–4 hours hiking
Overnight camping
Day 5
Lake to Base Camp
Base CampClimb out of the lake basin toward Tizi Ounnoums (3,660m), a steep and sustained ascent on loose terrain. This is one of the most physically demanding sections of the route. From the pass, descend into the basin leading to the Toubkal base camp area, where you rejoin the main trekking route.
5–6 hours hiking
Overnight in a refuge or camp
Day 6
Summit and Return
Start early for the ascent of Mount Toubkal (4,167m), the highest peak in North Africa. The climb is steady and at altitude, with wide views across the Atlas Mountains from the summit. After reaching the top, descend back to base camp and continue all the way down to Imlil, passing through the valley before transferring back to Marrakech.
10–12 hours hiking
Physical Difficulty
This is a moderately to highly demanding trek that builds over multiple consecutive days in the mountains. You’ll be hiking daily with sustained elevation gain, including several high passes above 3,000m and a summit day reaching 4,167m.
Most days involve 5–6 hours on the trail, with one shorter day at Lac d’Ifni. The final day is the most demanding, with a 10–12 hour summit push and full descent back to the valley.
The terrain varies from village paths and valley trails to loose rock, steep ascents, and high-altitude sections. No technical climbing is required, but the combination of altitude, consecutive days, and long distances makes this a serious physical effort.
This trip is best suited for travelers who are active, comfortable hiking for multiple hours a day, and prepared for sustained effort over several days in remote mountain terrain.
